The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has given environment clearance (EC) for expansion of the runway at Jammu Airport in Jammu and Kashmir.
The expansion will be carried out at an expense of Rs 92 crore. Jammu airport, which is in operation since 1985, belongs to the Indian Air Force, and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) maintains civil enclave for movement of passengers.
The existing runway is 2,042 mtr in length. It is proposed to be extended in order allow operations of wide bodied aircraft such as B-321. In the proposal, AAI has said that total 57 acre of land will be required for extension of the runway, out of which about 17 acre of land is under possession of the army and for which working permission is being pursued. The remaining 40 acre land is already under possession of AAI.
The annual operating capacity of the airport is about one million passengers per annum.
